Matt started his musical journey at age 10 when he had the opportunity to play the cello in his school orchestra. At age 12, he had a chance to take some lessons on bass and from there he developed a serious passion and interest in music, involving himself in as many different musical projects as he could. Through opportunities given to him in high school, Matt had the fortune of playing in many different orchestras and jazz ensembles including AMIS festivals in Beijing, Singapore, Luxembourg & London and in performing arts camps at the Manhattan School of Music and Trinity College of Music in London.
After leaving high school, Matt took a place at the prestigious Guildhall School of Music and Drama where he studied jazz, composition and performance under the tutelage of Malcolm Edmonstone, Scott Stroman, Steve Watts and Laurence Cottle. During these four years, Matt developed interests in many different styles and facets of music including composing, arranging and band leading. This is also where he found an interest in education and starting teaching electric and double bass privately before joining DaCapo in September 2016.
During his time in London, Matt has enjoyed performing with different groups around London and the UK including his own projects Pillow & Kase, an electric-bass and singer duo, MaddAddam, his own jazz octet, and MERV, a collaborative jazz-rock quartet, with other groups such as The London Jazz Orchestra, The National Youth Jazz Orchestra, The Guildhall Jazz Band (including performances with Malcolm Edmonstone, Liane Carroll and Scott Stroman), The NYJO Nonet, Sky Coloured, and Ben Hayes in such venues as The Vortex, Servant Jazz Quarters, The Barbican, RichMix, Milton Court, Brainchild Festival, Wigmore Hall, Cambridge Jazz Festival and The Spice Of Life.
