Martin Fogel
Martin Fogel is one of the most prominent guitarists to emerge from Sweden in recent years, having received great critical acclaim for his artistry in Swedish, UK and Japanese press. As well as touring extensively in Sweden, he regularly performs in England, Japan and Europe.
He first appeared on Swedish national TV at the age of 18, and has since given live broadcasts and interviews on both national TV and radio, including Japanese and European radio broadcasts. After graduating from both the Royal Academy of Music in London and the Academy of Music at Gothenburg University, Martin went on to become a prize winner in several, major national and international competitions, including the Royal Swedish Academy of Music’s Scholarship Awards, the Tokyo International Guitar Competition and the Toru Takemitsu Competition in Finland. He has performed at the Stockholm Concert Hall and at music festivals across Sweden, including Stenungsund Chamber Music Festival and Stockholm Intl. Guitar Festival. In London he has played in contemporary music series at the Queen Elizabeth Hall and at The Warehouse, Southbank. He has toured in all parts of Japan including at venues such as the Tokyo Bunka Kaikan Recital Hall and festivals like the Scandinavian Festival in Nagano and the Shonai International Guitar Festival. Supported by Japan Foundation for Regional Art-Activities, Martin took part in performance projects across Japan to promote interest in classical music amongst school students. He has performed in concert with pianist Colin Stone, guitarists Shin-ichi Fukuda and David Leisner etc, and has performed the guitar concertos of Takemitsu and Giuliani under conductor Petri Sakari with the Turku Symphony Orchestra in Finland. Martin is the Artistic Director of Lidköping Music Festival.
His debut-CD "SHENANDOAH" was selected “CD of the month” in Japan’s major CD magazine for classical music, and was lauded by the world’s leading guitar magazines. A live concert recording by Swedish Radio P2—together with longtime duopartner, flutist Ann Elkjär—was selected for BBC Radio 3’s “Euroclassic Notturno” and broadcasted in 11 European countries. The duo’s album "IMAGE" received a “Recommended CD of the Month” in CD Journal, Japan's major CD magazine. Sponsored by the Swedish Institute Martin conducted a project to study and record the complete works for guitar by Toru Takemitsu. The new CD "EQUINOX"—the complete works for solo guitar by Toru Takemitsu—received praise in the leading music magazines Classical Music, UK, and CD Journal, Japan.
