DaCapo Primary Music

As some of you know, we have an exciting project bubbling away - a learning resource for primary schools which uses the classroom's interactive whiteboards to improve the delivery of schools’ music curriculum. This clever software tool will help primary teachers with little musical expertise to teach music to an ambitiously high level.

The idea draws on DaCapo’s established Schools’ Programme and will support teachers to better teach music.

What’s the need?

Most nursery and primary music teaching in the UK is carried out by non-specialists, many of whom struggle with music theory. This has a profound effect on the musical literacy of a generation of children.

Even where there are qualified music teachers, they often find it difficult to source a progressive programme of learning. The National Curriculum doesn’t provide a detailed music curriculum and other commercially available music training solutions do not aspire to the same high levels of musical achievement as DaCapo.

Demand for music teaching in the Primary school sector from teachers, parents and pupils is significantly greater than the capacity (and available budgets) that schools can provide. Furthermore, the latest National Curriculum guidance requires schools to provide pupils with a musical education, but with no associated provision of funding.

In many schools, the budget for music teaching is very small, often not enough to afford an in-house or visiting teacher. All this means many children are not receiving the quality music education they deserve.

The solution

DaCapo have developed a way to change this and the result will be DaCapo Primary Music.

Interactive whiteboards in schools provide the ideal platform for delivering the DaCapo teaching method more widely. The technology allows big-screen, whole- class teaching, using rich media and with acceptable audio quality.

Using the award-winning DaCapo lesson plans and resources (winner of Rhinegold Award 2014), the software programme will work like an app on an iPad. The board introduces whole class activities that include Singing, Movement, Reading and Instrumental work. Everything is taught through songs, introduced by the whiteboard ‘voice’.

Making it happen

We are currently in the stage of collecting investment to build the software. If you would like to know more about this project and hear our business plan please get in touch - [email protected]
