Sally learned the cello with his local music service in Shropshire before moving onto Chetham's School of Music where he studied with cellist David Smith. After a year at music college which turned out not to be the right thing, he went to university in Glasgow, where he had his musical horizons broadened with genres including rock, pop, folk, experimental and electronic music, as well as some in-depth study of the classical cello with Mark Bailey, Betsy Taylor and Rachael Lee, alongside trips to London to study klezmer with teachers and performers from the UK and USA. After graduation he fancied a change and did an MMus in Ethnomusicology at SOAS, where he specialised in klezmer, taking lessons with Merlin Shepherd and Ilana Cravitz. Sally loves his teaching and playing work (which is mostly in the pit for musicals) equally and wouldn't like to have to choose one over the other. He teaches the cello at DaCapo's Saturday Centre as well as DaCapo classroom music lessons in primary schools. He also thinks and writes about subjects including gender, consent culture, queer things and education, and he knits. Sometimes he combines his thinking and knitting to knit queer things.
