Alice Purton

Alice comes from a family of musicians, and began singing and playing the piano from a young age. However, she had her heart set on the cello and started playing her very own 16th size at the age of five. Alice spent lots of time playing in orchestras and ensembles at school and the Bromley Youth Music Trust, and was also a member of the National Youth Orchestra of Great Britain for several years.

After leaving school Alice spent a busy four years studying music on the Joint Course between Manchester University and Royal Northern College of Music, and then went on to complete a two-year Master of Performance programme at the Royal College of Music. During those years, Alice studied with Melissa Phelps, Raphael Wallfisch and Karine Georgian.

Alongside her teaching, Alice enjoys working as a chamber musician. She loves to play contemporary music, which alongside the cello sees Alice acting, vocalising, playing with electronics and also object percussion. Her group Distractfold Ensemble gives concerts all over Europe and America, and in 2014 became the first ever UK ensemble to win the prestigious Kranichstein Musikpreis at the International Course for Contemporary Music in Darmstadt, Germany. Alice also plays with a flute, voice and cello ensemble, Trio Atem, which has been together since 2006 and has commissioned a huge amount of music for this unusual combination. On the classical side, Alice is the cellist with the Chagall Piano Quartet. Formed in 2011, the group has recently performed in major London venues including St. Martin-in-the-Fields and the Wigmore Hall.
