Greg Monk, Senior Teacher

Greg graduated from The University of Birmingham (BMus Hons) in 2009 and has been working for DaCapo since 2011. Its ethos and approach has changed the way he thinks about music education his experiences working at the Flagship Family Music Centre confirming that music education really can be for all, if we are given the opportunity. For DaCapo he has taught at three summer schools, across the primary age range and now teaches secondary music while continuing to run a parent choir at the Family Music Centre. Greg recently attended the British Kodaly Academy Summer School, including workshops given by renowned Kodaly specialists Dr James Cuskelly (Australia), Dr Arpad Toth and Dr Laszlo Nemes (Hungary). He holds a PGCE from the UCL Institute of Education and is constantly looking for new ways the approach can be used at Secondary Level.

"Working for DaCapo and learning about the Kodaly approach has undoubtedly improved my own musicianship. I am able to understand music using skills my undergraduate music degree did not teach me (that's not to criticise my degree, but to argue the point that a Kodaly module should be made compulsory on all undergraduate degrees!). Not only can the approach allow anybody to take part in musical activities regardless of their experience it allows them to understand and break down the language of music. The grounding DaCapo has given me is invaluable in my work now as a Secondary Music Teacher. We all know the song from The Sound of Music, I just wish I'd known the relevance of 'Do(e), a deer' as a child! Come and see DaCapo at work!"
